8/20/1828Brahmo Samaj, the first movement to initiate religio-social reforms, was founded by Ram Mohun Roy (1772-1833) in Calcutta. Influenced by Islam and Christianity, Roy denounced polytheism, idol worship, repudiated the Vedas, avataras, karma and reincarnation, caste and more. The first session of Adi Brahmo Samaj was held in the rented house by Kamal Bose of Chitpore Road in Jorasanko area in Calcutta.

9/1/1913Snehangshu Kanta Acharya, politician, social reformer, lawyer and athelete, was born.
2/10/1946Gandhiji revives 'Harijan' and allied group of weekly journals.
3/12/1930Mahatma Gandhi started Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad to break salt law. This march stretched of 375 km. was covered in 26 days with 78 followers. The whole of India joined the campaign to boycott foreign goods and refused to pay taxes. Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan or Frontier Gandhi started Khudai Kidmatgar movement in the North-West Frontier. The Government went back to its brutal force and about 90,000 people were imprisoned within a year. In Peshawar, the Gharwal regiment refused to shoot a demonstrator. In Nagaland Rani Gaidilita, a 13 year old girl raised the flag against the Britishers and was put into life imprisonment in 1932. Nehru hearing this uttered A day will come when India will remember her and Cherish her. She was released after Independence.
8/30/1659Aurangzeb plotted the death of his brother Dara Shikoh and beheaded him. He was buried in a vault under the dome of Humayun's tomb.

12/5/1950Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, great revolutionary, freedom fighter and teacher, passed away.
5/31/1926Probir ""Khokhan"" Sen, cricket wicket-keeper (India in late 40's/early 50's), was born.
7/29/1996Aruna Asaf Ali, freedom fighter and player of important role in Quit India Movement, passed away in New Delhi. She was awarded with Bharat Ratna.
