| 4/4/1898 | Hiralal Sen and his brother Motilal Sen purchased a Bioscope Cinematographic Machine from London. The first show of imported films was arranged by them at Classic Theatre on April 4, after which they formed 'The Royal Bioscope Co.,' controlled by H. L. Sen & Bros., 85/2, Maszid Badi Street, Calcutta. The Bioscope Company started touring the provinces of Bengal, Orissa and Bihar. |

| 7/21/1947 | Indian Constitution Assembly accepted the tricolour flag as its National Flag. This flag is with three equal horizontal stripes of Saffron (Sacrifice), White (Truth) and Green (Prosperity) and a Chakra is superimposed on white (Dharma Chakra on the capitol of Ashoka's Pillar at Sarnath) in blue colour having 24 spokes. The ratio of the width to length is two to three. |
| 1/4/1932 | Mahatma Gandhi and other members of his All-India National Congress are back in jail again. After the collapse of the London conference, British authorities cracked down even harder on Gandhi and his followers, and the Mahatma urged Indians to increase their acts of civil disobedience. ""Wake up from sleep,"" Gandhi said as he ordered a boycott of British goods. ""Discard foreign cloth. Discard narcotics. Discard violence. Defy all orders calculated to crush the national spirit."" The government declared Gandhi's Congress an illegal organization. Under new laws, even peaceful picketing is illegal. The Congress party responded to the crackdown by recruiting more followers and striking more plants. |
